Netflix keeps rolling out new series and movies to keep a captive audience’s playlists filled into 2021. The streamers massive library will now include actress Zendaya in a romantic drama that’s looking to shake up viewers relationships just before Valentine’s Day.
Shot in black and white, the film Malcolm and Marie will follow a director (John David Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) as their relationship becomes unhinged following the premiere of his highly anticipated film. According to the film’s IMDb page, the production took place during the summer of 2020 and claims to be the first feature film to made in its entirety during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.
Zendaya is coming off her Emmy win for her role as Rue Bennett in HBO’s Euphoria, making history as the youngest woman to win in her category. In Malcolm and Marie, the actress will look to keep that momentum going as one of the most bankable “darlings” in Hollywood. Having caught fire with show creator Sam Levinson, she now has an arthouse style film in her repertoire to go along with her plethora of blockbusters.
It’s hard not to think about writer/director Sam Levinson given the film’s subject matter. The filmmaker is coming off the runaway success of Euphoria with an audience eagerly awaiting its second season. Reteaming with the show’s star and adding the talented John David Washington to the mix feels as close to recipe for success as one can get. Nonetheless, the real-world comparisons are easy to trace for an auteur looking to not be defined by one body of work.
Malcolm and Marie debuts February 5th on Netflix. See the film’s trailer below.
