Outgoing President Gets Perma-Banned on Twitter

On January 8th, 2021, Twitter banned Tr*mp’s account after allegedly being accused of inciting riots in Washington D.C. on Wednesday. Users who log onto the President’s page are now met with an empty page containing a single message: “Account suspended. Twitter suspends accounts which violate the Twitter Rules.” The social media company explained:

“In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action. Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open.

However, we made it clear going back years that these accounts are not above our rules entirely and cannot use Twitter to incite violence, among other things. We will continue to be transparent around our policies and their enforcement.”

The statement also includes an in depth analysis of the tweets that were identified as being against twitter’s policies, and the rationale behind finally suspending the account.

As more members of Tr*mp’s cabinet and white house resign after the chaos on Capitol Hill, social media users are curious if any more suspensions will come from the site or other platforms.
