The Umbrella Academy and the First Latino Superhero

The Umbrella Academy is back! Season 2 is premiering Friday, July 31st and I’m especially excited. Not just because it’s a really fun show to watch, but because it’s the first US TV show to have one of the few Latino superhero, played by none other than David Castañeda.

David plays Diego, also known as Number Two and The Kraken, and he is one of the adopted Hargreeves siblings who is extremely skilled at knife throwing, and happens to have the wittiest sense of humor.

The first season left us with the cliffhanger of Vanya destroying the world and the 7 siblings time traveling. In this season, we learned that they didn’t travel to an exotic location or time; they travelled to Dallas in the 60’s (ouch!) and were scattered in time over a three year period. Allison and Luther have built lives and moved on (separately), Vanya has amnesia after being hit by a lovely blonde and now lives with her and her family, until she figures out who she is (or someone claims her), Diego is locked in a madhouse, Klaus creates a really fun cult (seriously, where do I sign up) and Five is smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday. Now, the Umbrella Academy must find a way to reunite, figure out what caused the doomsday, put a stop to it, and return to the present timeline to stop that other apocalypse – all while being hunted by a trio of ruthless Swedish assassins. You know, the usual…

But going back to David Castañeda. Finally a Latino playing a superhero! And very well played, if you ask me. Charismatic, fun and lovable, he will for sure be one of your favorites (if he isn’t already). We can’t wait and it’s just been announced that Elliot Page is trans.
