Superhero films have been the blockbuster zeitgeist of the 21st century. Each year, fans attend theaters in droves to see their favorite A-Listers in spandex to the tune of billions in ticket sales. As moviegoers demand representation that better reflects their communities, studios have been searching for the next crop of actors to refresh their stories.
So where are all of the Latin heroes? Are there any young heroes discovering their powers outside of Spiderman? Also, are superpowered beings contractually obligated to wear spandex? These things keep me up at night. Luckily, Twentieth-Century Studios and Marvel look to answer those questions with their latest film, The New Mutants.
Spinning off of the X-Men franchise, The New Mutants is billed as a horror-thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.
The film features some of the brightest young actors in the biz who have a lot of experience within the thriller and horror genres. Alice Braga (“City of God”, “Predators”), Henry Zaga (“13 Reasons Why”), and Anya-Taylor Joy (“Glass”, “The VVitch”) are no strangers to action and suspense. Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”), Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things”), and Blu Hunt (“The Originals”) round out one of the most stacked casts of young heroes we’ve ever seen.
