Already on top of the entertainment world, Selena Gomez is still reaching new heights. Literally.
The actress, singer, and IG mogul is set to play mountaineer icon Silvia Vasquez-Lavado in a brand new biopic from filmmaker Elgin James (Mayans M.C.). The movie, which is titled In the Shadow of the Mountain, is based on the soon to be released memoir of the same name from Vasquez-Lavado.
Born in Lima, Peru, the world record-breaking climber is the first Peruvian woman to summit Mount Everest. As if that isn’t enough, she went on to become the first openly gay woman to complete the Seven Summits, which consists of each continent’s tallest mountain. She would later complete the eight summits in 2019.
In addition to hiking achievements, Silvia also founded Courageous Girls – a non-profit organization that helps survivors of sexual violence through mountain climbing. Having been a victim herself, Vasquez-Lavado found consolation in climbing and wanted to provide an opportunity for others to achieve the same feeling.
“When you experience trauma, you become detached of your body, of your own persona. I was so moved by the mountains that it rekindled my life.” Silvia Vasquez-Lavado to Heidi Stevens, Chicago Tribune.
The book isn’t expected to be released until 2022, so we don’t expect the film to release until around then. We hope to see more films such as this that highlight Latinas making a difference!
