Melanie Martinez Is Twisted, Demented, and…Brilliant

Melanie Martinez does what only the most exceptional artists can do. She can make you feel weird, off, hot, bothered, equally disturbed and compelled by her art. She gives you mixed feelings. She makes it so hard to look away.

Melanie has just put out an EP called After School, the follow up to her breakthrough album K-12. To be honest, Melanie Martinez is not my kind of music. It’s very girlie, very poppy, and very cutesy. Many songs are like these weird, demented lullabies. But I’m paying attention. Not just because the slightly warped, cartoonish songs like “Copycat” are catchy, which they are (even to a grown ass man), but because of what this hyper-twisted, avant-garde music artist does visually.

From her two-hour-long continuous music video (film) for the school days themed album K-12 to the demented Instagram posts that are right out of a Mark Ryden painting, Melanie is as unique in that she is as elite in her talent as visual art director as she is a vocalist who once made the finals on American’s Got Talent.

Melanie is strange. My god, she is strange. But strange in a way only the truly gifted can be. She makes us uncomfortable. Including most people who I show her Instagram to. Some find her act (and art) creepy. First of all, she has a very young looking face for some of the more suggestive numbers (she’s actually 26). Then there is the trademark half black, half white or pink hair (inspired by Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians), and of course her signature teeth.

Melanie proudly shows off her buck teeth. The kind you get when you suck on your thumb as a kid. She opted to not have them fixed. No braces, no treatments. It works for her. Again adding this weird fixation with not only youth, but childhood. But there’s more to it. It’s childhood relived, through the experience of a tattooed femme fatale who seems like she is already ready to play with, and then taxidermy, your kitten.

She throws a lot in our face. Her art is piercing. At first it bothers you, but then it grows on you. It squirms through your system to you get it. I’m beginning to feel like many of her fans. I know feel that her buck teeth are beautiful, and it makes absolute sense never to “fix” them, whatever the f*** “fix” even means.

The visual art goes hand in hand with her music. Elementary school themes splashed against the canvas of the Dr. Suessian landscapes of her pictures and videos. Once in a while she posts a digitally altered picture depicting her demonic transformation or even brutal mutilation. In some posts, she’s even been taxidermied herself.

Where does this girl come from? (New York actually, and of Dominican descent), but I think she comes from a well, much deeper, darker, than anything we have seen recently. She sets up with the pink tones, and whimsical, childlike lullaby tunes, and then she stabs us through the heart with the stem of rose.

Can you tell I’m intrigued? Check out her Instagram and you’ll understand why:

Melanie Martinez Copycart Lyrics

Over my shoulder, eyes peeking in
Analyze my every move, what current state I’m in
‘Cause you are colder than ice on my skin
Wanna get that A+, baby
So you take my shit
‘Cause I am little, right?
I won’t call you out
Teacher saying “You’d get credit, why would you stop now?”
You are so desperate
Craving that spotlight
Shine it on the ones who do the shit ’cause it’s their life
But I know the people around you say
“Just do what it takes to make it all the way”
You’re a copy cat
You take it then you leave it, honey
Just like that, just like that
You’re falling flat
You find someone like me to bring you up right back
Up right back
(Copy cat, copy cat)
Obsessed with power
You want it for yourself
Feeding on misogyny
But still you call yourself a feminista
If that were really true
You wouldn’t feel as if I were a current threat to you
But I know the people around you say
“Just do what it takes to make it all the way”
You’re a copy cat
You take it then you leave it, honey
Just like that, just like that
You’re falling flat
You find someone like me to bring you up right back
Up right back
(Copy cat, copy cat)
Find someone else to leech on, lady
My blood’s for me, not for you, baby
College, estate and all your savings
My blood’s for me, so no more taking
Anything you can do, I can do better
In prison for stealing, gon’ write you a letter
Courageous and clever
Creative director
I raised the bar higher, Sir I broke the record
I’m hot as peppers, spent more time in leather
Scuffed up my boots, boy I’ll stomp you in Sketchers
They wanna build like their first name is Hector
Back against wall, bitch I am a projector
From the projects, don’t check on my ex
Like uni-brows they are there for connects
Wish you the best, won’t show you my next move
So I guess you’ll be upset
Don’t cry, no baby, you’ll find your own way
Think for yourself, it will all be okay
Copyright lyrics, you can’t steal my spirit
They live for my music, they’re dying to hear it
Imitated, never duplicated
You wish you related
You wish you’d have made it
Imitated, never duplicated
You wish you related
You wish you’d have made it
You’re a copy cat
You take it then you leave it, honey
Just like that, just like that
You’re falling flat
You find someone like me to bring you up right back
Up right back
(Copy cat, copy cat)
