Mariachis are superheroes. They have the incredible power to lift people’s spirits and get them moving with their magical serenades. Without any fiestas to attend lately, mariachis are spreading their good vibes for the heroes on the frontline of the pandemic.
At the epicenter of the United States pandemic in New York City, Mariachis from Academia De Mariachi Nuevo Amanecer performed outside hospitals in Queens and Brooklyn. Outfitted with safety protocols such as face masks, the musicians showed their solidarity with healthcare workers during this difficult time.
On the west coast, mariachis paid tribute to immigrant farmworkers in Ventura County who are working hard to keep food on everyone’s table.
Essential workers are getting in on the fun as well. In March, an employee at a San Antonio H-E-B market hired a mariachi band to play while customers shopped. The band, along with the help of two girls fighting in dinosaur costumes, helped bring a bit of happiness in a normally tense environment.
When it comes to shaking off the coronavirus blues, nothing works better than a little mariachi music. What’s your favorite mariachi memory? Let us know in the comments below.
