Meet Luis Rodolfo Abinader, the 52-year-old businessman who has never held elected office but is now the president of the Dominican Republic. Earlier this month, Abinader and his vice-presidential running mate, Raquel Peña de Antuña, beat Gonzalo Castillo (PLD), ammassing 53% of the votes. The new president is a part of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and will replace Danilo Medina of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), who has been in office for the past 2 terms. The PLD has had a 16-year run in power in the Dominican Republic.
President Abinader ran and finished second back in the 2016 presidential elections, ultimately winning this year’s elections showing he’s number one in the people’s eyes. When addressing the media after his presidency was announced he said, “all Dominicans won by voting for change.” Let’s see what he can do!
