Latinos are prevalent in the fastest growing sports promotion in the world, the UFC. In the sport of mixed martial arts, many Latinos have risen to stardom, but superstardom is reserved for a different level of fame. Recently we chronicled Jorge Masvidal’s rise. and how Teofimo Lopez conquered boxing. But who is the next bona fide Latino star in the UFC, who is the next Canelo of UFC?
At the top of the list you have to mention Brian Ortega. When a fighter puts on a performance as great and dominant, dare I say surgical (marked by precision and technical mastery of the opponent) as Brian “T-City” did last week against fellow featherweight contender Chan Sung Jung, aka The Korean Zombie, it creates a championship conversation.
It was an electric performance in every way, and it was more than enough to earn Brian a shot at UFC featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski—a fight UFC brass confirmed on-air shortly after the win. Sadly for many of his adoring fans, Brian chopped off his long hair before his last fight, but it was for a good cause as it was donated to a children’s chemotherapy organization.
But can he be a superstar? We will shortly find out. In the meantime, check out this segment we did on Brian before he was a big name in the UFC back in the day on LatiNation:
