California Secretary of State Alex Padilla has officially been appointed to fill the senate seat recently vacated by Vice President elect Kamala Harris. After months of in-fighting between Democratic factions, the news was announced earlier today by Governor Gavin Newsom. In a touching video call, Padilla began to cry after hearing the good news.
Son of Mexican immigrants who settled in the San Fernando Valley, Padilla will be the first Latino senator to ever serve the state of California. And let me just say, it’s about time. In a state that is over 40% Latino, this appointment is long overdue, but we’re happy it’s finally a reality.
“I am honored and humbled by the trust placed in me by Governor Newsom, and I intend to work each and every day to honor that trust and deliver for all Californians,” Mr. Padilla said in a recent statement.
“There is a lot of work to get to, of course, but I couldn’t help but think of my parents, who came here from Mexico in pursuit of the American dream,” he said. “All I ever heard as a child was work hard, study hard, and all I ever wanted to do was honor their sacrifices.”
